Rockwell Automation’s Automation Fair® At Home Event: Product & Technology Session Highlights

In a year when we’ve adapted to new ways of doing things, Rockwell Automation’s annual Automation Fair event followed suit. This year’s event, billed as Automation Fair At Home, was an entirely digital five-day experience with over 39,000 participants worldwide. Originally planned as a live event in Anaheim, California, Rockwell successfully pivoted for 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They did so by delivering an exceptional digital experience that rivaled some of the access, networking opportunities, and experiences of live Automation Fairs we’ve attended in the past.

Rockwell Automation Fair - Remote

The French Gerleman team and many of our customers look forward to Automation Fair every year, as an opportunity to learn about the latest technology coming from one of the leading manufacturers in our industry and their partners. While the experience was different this year, Automation Fair At Home delivered on information and innovation. In this blog, we’ll cover some of our teams picks for the best product and technology sessions we attended. This year’s event was completely free to attend, and registration is still available on the Automation Fair website. Once you’ve registered, you will be able to view the on-demand session catalog and search for the sessions we highlight below.

Our Picks: The Best of the Best Automation Product and Technology Sessions

PT15 – Apply Advanced Sensing Products to Solve Difficult Applications

This session went into great detail on Rockwell Automation’s reconfigurable 3D sensing product, Swift-E. This tool enables machine builders and production plants to adapt to changing products or conditions, making it an ideal solution for production lines with high flexibility requirements. The Swift-E demo in this presentation was exceptionally well done and shows just how versatile the sensor is and how easy it is to work with.

PT17 – Short-Circuit Current Ratings and Your Panel

This presentation goes into great detail on short circuit current ratings. The session explained what’s changed in the ULA508A 3rd edition and the implications of those changes on the panel. Our team found the Q&A session at the end to be especially beneficial. A combination of great attendee questions and insightful expert answers made for a very valuable conclusion to this session.

PT20 – Connect, Enable, and Secure Modern Industrial Architectures with FactoryTalk Industrial Automation Software

Smart operations are connected operations. This presentation talks through the communication technologies designed to enable a Connected Enterprise in a scalable and secure way. You’ll get a great understanding of the differences between, and use cases for, FT Link, FT Linx Gateway, FT Linx Data Bridge, and FT Linx OPC UA Connector.

PT24 – ThinManager® Delivering and Managing the Connected Enterprise: Overview

The ThinManager® platform simplifies the way productivity content is delivered and devices are managed within manufacturing or production environments. This session introduced ThinManager® 12 and demonstrated how it can revolutionize your organization from the plant floor to the control room, change how you view mobility in those areas, and maximize the performance of the Connected Enterprise.

PT45 – Ethernet Advanced Physical Layer for the Future of Process Automation

This section explored smart sensors and production instruments that are enabled by Ethernet-APL technology. We particularly enjoyed the first part of the presentation, where you’ll get a solid overview of single pair ethernet.

PT48 – Optimize Your Control Strategies for Less with Virtual Commissioning

This session will be particularly of interest to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). The presenters do a great job demonstrating how simulation-based digital twins produce accurate representation of a machine’s behavior and performance. Learn how virtual commissioning can show you real-time validation of your control code with CAD-based visualization before your machine even goes into service.
