We are in the midst of cold and flu season with several higher risk months still ahead of us. Most common colds, just like the flu, are brought on by a virus and are contagious. Any contagious virus spreads through airborne respiratory droplets such as coughs and sneezes, skin to skin contact like a handshake, saliva from a shared drink, or by touching a contaminated surface such as a desk or computer mouse.
At French Gerleman, we recognize that a healthy workplace environment directly affects productivity and we are proud to offer a full array of janitorial and sanitation products to assist you in keeping your team members healthy.
The best way to prevent the spread of any virus is through education and prevention, and of course, having the right products on hand to help reduce germs and contaminants in your facility. Here are some tips for you and your employees when it comes to managing the spread of germs:
Wash your hands.
Wash your hands with soap and water frequently, and for the amount of time it takes you to sing the Happy Birthday song. This is one of the best ways to prevent getting sick. French Gerleman can stock your restrooms and clean-up stations with hand soap from the leading manufacturers, and anti-bacterial handwipes for quick cleanup. If soap and water are not available, alcohol-based hand sanitizers are a good option to help reduce the number of germs on your hands.
Avoid touching your nose and mouth.
Additionally, make sure to sneeze into the crook of your elbow. Since germs can spread by skin to skin contact, keeping the germs off of your hands will help to prevent them from spreading. And of course, with a sneeze comes the sniffles, so you’ll need to be sure to have plenty of tissues on hand. French Gerleman offers a wide range of facial tissues to help your employees manage a runny nose. And once you do wipe your nose, wash your hands.
Encourage your employees to stay home if they are sick.
This will help to ensure that that the illness stops spreading throughout the office.
Maintain a clean work environment.
There is a difference between sanitizing, disinfecting and cleaning:
- Cleaning removes germs and dirt from a surface or object, while disinfecting kills germs on a surface or object. We recommend cleaning and disinfecting surfaces such as doorknobs, computer keyboards, desktops, or any other objects that come into frequent contact with employees.
- Sanitizing reduces the number of germs on a surface or object. Once a surface is cleaned and disinfected, it’s good practice to wipe down surfaces daily with disinfecting wipes. Keep in mind that germs can live up to 48 hours, so be sure to frequently wipe down high traffic areas and key items like keyboards and phones to help keep germs from spreading.
Each of the above is important in maintaining a clean and germ-free environment, and French Gerleman can provide you with the guidance you need to make the right product selections.
